This year, the Economic Scientific Research Institute (ESRI) under the Ministry of Economy of Azerbaijan celebrates its 60th anniversary.

It is worth mentioning that the ESRI is the successor of the Scientific Research Institute of Economics, which was organized under the State Planning Committee of the Azerbaijan SSR by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR No. 685 of October 2, 1964. Since its establishment, the Institute has successfully carried out its activities, evolving through various leaderships and undergoing regular changes in its status and structure.
In 1993, as the result of return of our national leader Heydar Aliyev to the leadership of the country, restoration works were started in the field of organization and management of scientific researches connected with restoration of state independence and beginning of transition to market economy. By Decree No. 98 of January 17, 1994, which he adopted as President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Center for Economic Reforms was established at the Research Institute.
As of 2001, with the inclusion of the Center into the structure of the newly created Ministry of Economic Development (now the Ministry of Economy), research work became related to specific economic and management issues. In 2006, by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Scientific-Research Institute of Economic Reforms of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan was established as a result of merging the Scientific-Research Institute of Scientific-Technical Information and Technical-Economic Research into this center. Finally, by Presidential Decree No. 1382 of June 26, 2021, a public legal entity “Economic Scientific Research Institute” was established on the basis of the Research Institute of Economic Reforms.
During the 60-year period, the main directions of the Institute's activity were the definition of priority directions and fields of economic development, solving problems of improving the living standards of the population, development of agro-industrial complex in the republic, preparation of the strategy of reforms in the socio-economic sphere and analysis of the results of reforms, implementation of initiatives from State ProgramsTop of Form
, conducting important scientific and technical research in socio-economic fields. The Institute was also engaged in training scientific personnel who played an important role in the future development of the country, establishing relations with various countries, organizations and institutions in the fields relevant to its profile, and publishing scientific and journalistic publications.
Currently, with its updated structure and personnel, ESRI's present and future activities are focused on conducting scientific research in areas such as the digital economy, innovation activities, the role of artificial intelligence in the economy, and the green economy. These efforts are based on the National Priorities for Azerbaijan’s socio-economic development by 2030. Additionally, significant attention is given to the implementation of measures derived from the "Socio-Economic Development Strategy of Azerbaijan for 2022-2026" and the training of qualified personnel at the doctoral level.
This year it is also planned to organize an international conference related to the 60th anniversary of the Institute, to award outstanding Institute employees at the end of the year and to publish the “Anniversary Book”.
